St. Albans Choral Society - Duruflé Requiem
Venue: St. Peter's Church, St. Albans, Hertfordshire
Saturday 26 June 2010.
Welwyn Garden City Orchestra and Chorus will hold its summer concert at St. Francis Church, Parkway, Welwyn Garden City, at 7.30pm on Saturday 26 June 2010.
The concert includes the Serenade for Winds, a youthful work featuring jaunty themes and a relatively simple form, which Richard Strauss, already a child prodigy, composed around the time when he entered the University of Munich in 1881/82.
The orchestra will also play selections from Sir William Walton’s score for Henry V, a classic Shakespearean film produced in 1944 which memorably starred Laurence Olivier in the title role, and whose patriotic themes fitted well with the wartime mood of its era.
The main work of the evening will be the well-loved Requiem in D minor by Gabriel Fauré, which in his own words he “composed for fun” between 1887 and 1890. This popular choral-orchestral setting of the Catholic Mass for the Dead is probably the best known of his major works, and its most famous movement is the soprano aria Pie Jesu.
The Orchestra, whose leader is Christos Kokkinos, will be conducted by its regular conductor James Ross, and the chorus master is Crispin Lewis.
TICKETS £11; £7 students/under 18s; accompanied under 12s free. Call 01707 322324, email tickets@wgcms.org.uk or purchase at the door.
